The UW Gear Minuteman II 5.56 NATO chest rig is designed to give the civilian rifleman the optimum platform to carry 3 x 30-rd mags, plus additional gear as required.  It is designed for rural, unsupported operations, where mag protection and retention are critical, yet quick access is still desired.

The mags are still fully enclosed, but since we are dealing with the 5.56, the pouches are cut somewhat

differently.  The sides do not come up quite so high as the AK rigs, and are tailored a little tighter since there is less curvature to the mag.  The top flaps are designed  to fit snugly with 30-rd P-mags, but will also work with most other 30-rd mags.  They also feature our Fas Tab closure system, which is so cave-man simple, we think it fits our needs perfectly.

The base itself is tailored for the shorter mags, so it is not quite as tall as the AK rigs.  It has a variable series of Molle webbing on the sides for additional gear.  And a dump pouch on the back for reloading with retention, which can also be used simply as an admin pouch.  The shoulder harness was designed to comfortably carry the load, and will work either with or without armor.  Standard "X" straps aren't as comfortable and don't work well with armor.  It is adjustable to fit most sizes, and either high or low carry styles.  It is also designed to work with a hydro bladder pouch or small assault pack on the back, which nicely balances the load.

This design will be a somewhat radical departure for some.  We have chosen to make a 5.56 rig

which emphasizes protection and reloading with retention, versus some which emphasize speed reloads.  While we think that reloading fast is important, we also think that this aspect has been over-emphasized, from a timed, competition standpoint.  We think our rig strikes the perfect balance

between protection in a harsh environment, and quick access to our mags.
